One important part of every MentorKids After-School Program is time to finish homework. But what happens for the students that don’t need homework help? In the South Scottsdale Promise Neighborhood, there are 5 young women (Vanessa 4th, Maria 4th, Nadeen 5th, Mirna 6th, and Rosa 6th) who rarely have any homework. To keep them challenged and engaged, Mrs.Grace suggested they help the younger children with reading. They initially agreed as long as they could leave if they didn’t like it.
Weeks later they are still helping the younger class! Every single one of them loves helping out and having a purpose in working with the younger kids. Now they ask every day if they can go over and help! Rosa has also decided she wants to be a teacher when she is older.

|Abbey LujanLEAD Program Cooridinator & TeacherAbbey is the Palomino Promise Neighborhood LEAD (7-8th grade) Program Coordinator and Lead Teacher. She has been with MentorKids for a little over a year. “I like to help students grow in their faith and I appreciate that MentorKids allows me to care about kids in more ways than just the academic.” She has a Bachelor of Science degree in Elementary Education from NAU and taught 1st, 2nd, 4th, and 6th grade before joining us. In addition to teaching, she also has ministry experience. “My husband works for Young Life and I have been a volunteer leader for almost 6 years.”|
Family is very important to Abbey. She is married to Jorge and has an 18-month-old son named James. “I spend a lot of my time with my son-I love being his mom,” she shares.
Favorite MK memory? “Last summer, we were finally able to be with kids after months
|of being on Zoom and Facebook. It was awesome to see a whole group of middle schoolers have fun and also show off their swimming skills. All of them were really good swimmers. I think that had a lot to do with the many summers with MentorKids learning to swim. It’s cool that we make an impact in kids’ lives that we often don’t see.“|
